PDA (Public Display of Affection)
Chris King: Whenever I walk on the campus, I easily discover couples hugging and kissing. I am sure how many Americans agree a fact that this scenes may embarrass people from other countries. It doesn't seem that there is a problem with that , but it can be a problem depending on culture.
I agree that this should be a lovely moment, but probably many Asians might not do this in public. Look around! Have you seen any Asian couple kissing on the street? They would not even dare to see you when you are kissing to someone on the street.
Mostly, Asian culture care about community more than individual. So, in the western culture, people may not be interested in others' business. However, Asians do care others' business if it affects community in some way. I do not know exactly why Asians would have a negative feeling toward this lovely moment, but for sure they don't like it. Jealousy? Maybe, I don't know.
In Korea, Law even defines that excessive PDA can be a violation of the rights of others to share the public space. For instance, if a drunken couple is kissing hard at the street corner in Korea, some individuals may call police that the drunken couple would recieve a warning or even fine. Noramlly, it hardly happens in Korea.
As I have lived in the U.S for 6 years, now I am used to this PDA. However, some Asians may still think that PDA is not appropriate in their sight. The United State is a melting pot. Even though European caucasian culture is the majority in the society, but shouldn't PDA be considered for its appropriateness if it makes others embrassed in some degree?
Queen P. : I'm with you Chris, I wish PDA would become PDDon't! However, as the Westerner, I submit, our culture excepts and embraces some PDA. Couples holding hands, and giving goodbye kisses show each other and those unassuming victims around them that they may assume from the outside their relationship is flourishing. If it's a girlfriend boyfriend relationship PDA seems to be used a repellent for any interested onlookers, or other curious dating potentials. However I remember learning in a biology class, the opposite can actually occur. The hormones released by females during these PDA interactions cause other males close enough to sense them, to actually become attracted to the females. One of life's irony's. PDA. PDDon't.
